EPISTLE READING
Hebrews 11:33-40; 12:1-2
BRETHREN, all the saints through faith conquered kingdoms, enforced justice, received promises, stopped the mouths of lions, quenched raging fire, escaped the edge of the sword, won strength out of weakness, became mighty in war, put foreign armies to flight. Women received their dead by resurrection. Some were tortured, refusing to accept release, that they might rise again to a better life. Others suffered mocking and scourging, and even chains and imprisonment. They were stoned, they were sawn in two, they were tempted, they were killed with the sword; they went about in skins of sheep and goats, destitute, afflicted, ill-treated - of whom the world was not worthy - wandering over deserts and mountains and in dens and caves of the earth. And all these, though well attested by their faith, did not receive what was promised, since God had foreseen something better for us, that apart from us they should not be made perfect. Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfection of our faith.

GOSPEL READING
Matthew 10:32-33; 37-38; 19:27-30
The Lord said to his disciples, "Every one who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven; but whoever denies me before men, I also will deny him before my Father who is in heaven. He who loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; and he who loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; and he who does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me." Then Peter said in reply, "Lo, we have left everything and followed you. What then shall we have?" Jesus said to them, "Truly, I say to you, in the new world, when the Son of man shall sit on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. And every one who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or lands, for my name’s sake, will receive a hundredfold, and inherit eternal life. But many that are first will be last, and the last first."

GOCGO Second Annual Youth Murder Mystery Party

Back by popular demand this summer — murder and intrigue!

We will be holding the second annual Youth Ministry “murder mystery” party. Everyone had a BLAST with this last year, and this year the event will be even bigger and better!

Look for the date and time to be published soon! In the mean time please contact Dave Elfering if you would like to attend so we can make sure to schedule the party at the best possible time for everyone’s busy summer calendars.

This year’s party will be “Horror at Homecoming” complete with costumes, a home dance in the gym and best of all …. a mystery to solve!

In the midst of a winning football season, school pride is running rampant at the high school. Not only is competition fierce on the football field, but the students are battling it out for grades, popularity, affection, class ranking as well as the coveted homecoming king and queen title. With so much excitement surrounding the election, everyone is planning on being in attendance at the dance to see who will be crowned royalty.

Will it be the class president who is looking to extend his reign past the student council? The pom pom captain who has used her moves to land more than a homecoming court nomination? Or possibly the math team captain who is desperate to win at something other than a math meet.

While competition breeds excellence, it will also make one guest commit an act of vengeance…

At the dance, the sinister will shimmy among the sinless and try to go unnoticed. With their futures on the line, it will be up to the students and staff of Mayhem High to make sure the felon does not go free.

CONGRATULATIONS

Andrea Wilger was presented the Frank C. Heinisch Memorial Scholarship for $10,000 from the Omaha Education Association Foundation on Tuesday, May 6. Congratulations Andrea!!

EPISTLE READING
Mark 15:43-47; 16:1-8

At that time, Joseph of Arimathea, a respected member of the council, who was also himself looking for the kingdom of God, took courage and went to Pilate, and asked for the body of Jesus. And Pilate wondered if he were already dead; and summoning the centurion, he asked him whether he was already dead. And when he learned from the centurion that he was dead, he granted the body to Joseph. And he bought a linen shroud, and taking him down, wrapped him in the linen shroud, and laid him in a tomb which had been hewn out of the rock; and he rolled a stone against the door of the tomb. Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses saw where he was laid.

And when the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, bought spices, so that they might go and anoint him. And very early on the first day of the week they went to the tomb when the sun had risen. And they were saying to one another, “Who will roll away the stone for us from the door of the tomb?” And looking up, they saw that the stone was rolled back; for it was very large. And entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, dressed in a white robe; and they were amazed. And he said to them, “Do not be amazed; you seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has risen, he is not here; see the place where they laid him. But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him, as he told you.” And they went out and fled from the tomb; for trembling and astonishment had come upon them; and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.

GOSPEL READING
Acts of the Apostles 6:1-7

IN THOSE DAYS, when the disciples were increasing in number, the Hellenists murmured against the Hebrews because their widows were neglected in the daily distribution. And the twelve summoned the body of the disciples and said, “it is not right that we should give up preaching the word of God to serve tables. Therefore, brethren, pick out from among you seven men of good repute, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we may appoint to this duty. But we will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word.” And what they said pleased the whole multitude, and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit, and Philip, and Prochoros, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolaos, a proselyte of Antioch. These they set before the apostles, and they prayed and laid their hands upon them. And the word of God increased; and the number of the disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests were obedient to the faith.

Holy Week - Running the Gauntlet

In the early morning fuzz after midnight services, a few thoughts about Holy Week came to me that I wanted to share.

If you haven’t had the opportunity, or perhaps taken the time, to attend all/most of the services it a unique and at times daunting experience. As someone attempting to learn to chant this was the first time that I’ve done so and it was a vivifying challenge. Its can even make you wonder what in the world you are doing! (i.e. you might get crabby and/or snappy! :)

But if you take the time and let the wide range of teachings, readings and hymns sink in, it is something that will propel you with greater force back into your everyday life. The Old Testament lessons on Job, Jonah and prophecies and reliving in its entirety the last days of Christ leading to the Resurrection lay out very clearly why we believe what we do, and help us to build on a firm foundation rather than one of sand (Matthew 7:24-27).

There is a TV show called “24″ in which you watch the events of the program unfold in actual “real” time rather than being a condensed episode. Our Holy Week is a lot like that and it is one of the things that makes Orthodoxy unique (and valuable). It is very tempting (and normal) to want to skip to the punch line, especially by Holy Thursday when your feet hurt. As Americans we’re probably guilty of being attention deficit and spending the entire week will challenge that, and this can be daunting or even irritating.

There is a conventional wisdom that “the good things in life are never easy” and Holy Week is a testament to the truth of that! The challenge of spending hours at Liturgies and services during a span of days causes one to go beyond just dropping in. As you stand with an achy back, feet to match and perhaps a rumbly stomach I think it makes us think more deeply; and that is perhaps entirely the point.

Christ is Risen!

GREAT AND HOLY PASCHA

As You rose from the dead, Jesus, accept whatever good will is in us, and send us a corresponding measure of strength. Our soul is not capable of offering Thee a gift which is as great as Thou art. May Thy marvelous death move Thee to compassion, O Lord. Our error is much mightier than our prayer. Our prayer is insignificant, but our guilt is great. Thus we ask Thee to reconcile us by Thy blood, O All-merciful One.

EPISTLE READING

Acts of the Apostles 1:1-8

IN THE FIRST BOOK, O Theophilos, I have dealt with all that Jesus began to do and teach, until the day when he was taken up, after he had given commandment through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. To them he presented himself alive after his passion by many proofs, appearing to them during forty days, and speaking of the kingdom of God. And while staying with them he charged them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, “you heard from me, for John baptized with water, but before many days you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”

So when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom of lsrael?” He said to them, “it is not for you to know times or seasons which the Father has fixed by his own authority. But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria and to the end of the earth.”

GOSPEL READING

John 1:1-17

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God; all things were made through him, and without him was not anything made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came for testimony, to bear witness to the light, that all might believe through him. He was not the light, but came to bear witness to the light.

The true light that enlightens every man was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world knew him not. He came to his own home, and his own people received him not. But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God; who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.

And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth; we have beheld his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father. (John bore witness to him, and cried, “This was he of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me ranks before me, for he was before me.’”) And from his fullness have we all received, grace upon grace. For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

As I hold pussywillows and palms in my hands, rouse Thy strength and come, that Thou mightest save me. Beam Thy lightning and dispense His power, that he may be struck with fear and flee from Thy face, for he has not the strength to stand before Thee…As soon as he perceives a sign of Thy grace, he is taken with fear of Thee and withdraws from such with shame. And now, O Master, save me, for I flee to Thee!

EPISTLE READING

Philippians 4:4-9

BRETHREN, rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Let all men know your forbearance. The Lord is at hand. Have no anxiety about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which passes all understanding, will keep your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is gracious, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, do; and the God of peace will be with you.

GOSPEL READING

John 12:1-18

Six days before Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazaros was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. There they made him a supper; Martha served, and Lazaros was one of those at table with him. Mary took a pound of costly ointment of pure nard and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair; and the house was filled with the fragrance of the ointment. But Judas

Iscariot, one of his disciples (he who was to betray him), said “Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?” This he said, not that he cared for the poor but because he was a thief, and as he had the money box he used to take what was put into it. Jesus said, “Let her alone, let her keep it for the day of my burial. The poor you always have with you, but you do not always have me.”

When the great crowd of the Jews learned that he was there, they came, not only on account of Jesus but also to see Lazaros, whom he had raised from the dead. So the chief priests planned to put Lazaros also to death, because on account of him many of the Jews were going away and believing in Jesus.

The next day a great crowd who had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, crying, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel!” And Jesus found a young donkey and sat upon it; as it is written, “Fear not, daughter of Zion; behold, your king is coming, sitting on a donkey’s colt!” His disciples did not understand this at first; but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that this had been written of him and had been done to him. The crowd that had been with him when he called Lazaros out of the tomb and raised him from the dead bore witness. The reason why the crowd went to meet him was that they heard he had done this sign.

EPISTLE READING

Hebrews 9:11-14

BRETHREN, when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things that have come, then through the greater and more perfect tent (not made with hands, that is, not of this creation) he entered once for all into the Holy Place, taking not the blood of goats and calves but his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption. For if the sprinkling of defiled persons with the blood of goats and bulls and with the ashes of a heifer sanctifies for the purification of the flesh, how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify your conscience from dead works to serve the living God.

GOSPEL READING

Mark 10:32-45

At that time, Jesus taking the twelve again, he began to tell them what was to happen to him, saying, “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man will be delivered to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will condemn him to death, and deliver him to the Gentiles; and they will mock him, and spit upon him, and scourge him, and kill him; and after three days he will rise.” And James and John, the sons of

Zebedee, came forward to him, and said to him, “Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you.” And he said to them, “What do you want me to do for you?” And they said to him, “Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory.” But Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?” And they said to him, “We are able.” And Jesus said to them, “The cup that I drink you will drink; and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized; but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared.” And when the ten heard it, they began to be indignant of James and John. And Jesus called them to him and said to them, “You know that those who are supposed to rule over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great men exercise authority over them. But it shall not be so among you; but whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. For the Son of man also came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

GOYA LENTEN RETREAT
Fight the Good Fight
The Race for Salvation - Facing Our Struggles
Saturday April 12th
10AM – 10PM
Fight? What? Have you noticed that many of the Church and biblical heroes are not philosophers but soldiers? Even Joel (3:10) says to let even the weak person say, “I am a soldier”. We know that Christ came into the world to radically turn it upside down, but to encourage us to battle? Is Paul referring to religious wars? Spiritual Warfare? Or an entirely different encounter of our faith? We’ll explore how to trust God in even or toughest times! Come and spend the day with us as we delve into God’s advice to “fight the good fight” and have fun too!
This retreat is for GOYA age youth, grades 6 and up due to the content and the activities.

CHILD ABUSE AWARENESS
The month of April has been declared Child Abuse Awareness Month and citizens of our nation are called to become more aware of the terrible tragedy of child abuse. More importantly for us as Orthodox Christians, we are being reminded that we have a sacred duty – as individuals, as families and as a church—to care for and nurture our children in loving and healthy manner, respecting their human dignity as creatures in God’s image.
We are blessed within our holy Archdiocese to have the ministry of Trinity Children’s Foundation which actively and aggressively addresses the prevention of child abuse and meet the needs of abused, neglected and abandoned children.
Trinity cares for children from infants to 18 years of age and currently cares for more than 1,000 everyday.
Metropolitan Isaiah of Denver encourages all parishes to become more aware of child abuse, to become more proactive in its prevention, and to support programs that help children suffering from abuse. Please visit the Trinity Children’s Foundation web site at www.trinitychildrensfoundation.org or call them at 800-543-7730

EPISTLE READING
Hebrews 4:14-16; 5:1-6
BRETHREN, since we have a high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we have not a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. For every high priest chosen from among men is appointed to act on behalf of men in relation to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. He can deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is beset with weakness. Because of this he is bound to offer sacrifice for his own sins as well as for those of the people. And one does not take the honor upon himself, but he is called by God, just as Aaron was. So also Christ did not exalt himself to be made a high priest, but was appointed by him who said to him, “Thou art my Son, today I have begotten thee”; as he says also in another place, “Thou art a priest for ever, after the order of Melchizedek.”

GOSPEL READING
Mark 8:34-38; 9:1
The Lord said: “If anyone wishes to come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel’s will save it. For what does it profit a man, to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? For what can a man give in return for his life? For whoever is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of man also be ashamed, when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.” And he said to them, “Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God come with power.”

EPISTLE READING
Hebrews 11:24-26,32-40
Brethren, by faith Moses, when he was grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter, choosing rather to share ill-treatment with the people of God than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin.
And what more shall I say? For time would fail me to tell of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, of David and Samuel and the prophets — who through faith conquered kingdoms, enforced justice, received promises, stopped the mouths of lions, quenched raging fire, escaped the edge of the sword, won strength out of weakness, became mighty in war, put foreign enemies to flight. Women received their dead by resurrection. Some were tortured, refusing to accept release, that they might rise again to a better life. Others suffered mocking and scourging, and even chains and imprisonment. They were stoned, they were sawn in two, they were killed with the sword; they went about in skins of sheep and goats, destitute, afflicted, ill-treated — of whom the world was not worthy — wandering over deserts and mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth.
And all these, though well attested by their faith, did not receive what was promised, since God had foreseen something better for us, that apart from us they should not be made perfect.

GOSPEL READING
John 1:43-51
At that time, Jesus decided to go to Galilee. And he found Philip and said to him, “Follow me.” Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. Philip found Nathanael, and he said to him, “We have found him of whom Moses in the law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.” Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.” Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and said of him, “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile!” Nathanael said to him, “How do you know me?” Jesus answered him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.” Nathanael answered him, “Rabbi, you are the son of God! You are the King of Israel!” Jesus answered him, “Because I said to you, I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe? You shall see greater things than these.” And he said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man.”

My space or waste of space?

Not a big posting, just a few thoughts about Myspace (and other similar social networking sites). Bluefishtv.com has a video about “social sites” that I think both parents and young people should consider. Take a look at the video!

If you wouldn’t sit down next to a stranger in public and tell them sensitive things about yourself, why do it on the Internet with millions of strangers?

Another area of concern with these social sites are the ways young people use them to criticize their parents. I think we all had some harsh thoughts about our parents as teens but it isn’t godly to use four letter words to describe our parents.

There is something about “MY” space that seems… well… narcissistic. I’ve read several myspace pages by children in Middle school that with very explicit and vulgar things on them about their parents. When you combine those two things it is a recipe for disaster. One of the signs that are spoken of in 2 Timothy are exactly those

“2 Timothy 3:2 For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,..”

I’m not saying that Myspace is a sign that the end of the world is coming, but some of the ways we use it certainly aren’t very positive. Online social sites are a modern reality and we can’t ignore them, but as with all things we have to think about whether our use of them is consistent with our faith. I read one time that the number one objection that those who don’t go to Church have about Christians is their dual lives — one Christian and the other worldly.

In Christ,

ORATORICAL FESTIVAL
Who Can Speak?
There has been a little confusion about who can give talks at the Oratorical Festival. The answer is that any student who wants to can deliver a talk! Here are the guidelines for the age groups:
6th grade & below: Speeches can be on any Church related topic and can be any length. Students in this age group are not scored
Grades 7-8-9: To compete for scholarships these talks should be 3-4 minutes in length and the topic must be from the official Diocese list (see parish blog for more information).
Grades 10-11-12: To compete for the scholarships the talks must be 4-5 minutes long and be on one of the official topics.

The date for the Oratorical Festival has been changed it will be held on Sunday, March 16 following the Philoptochos Soup & Salad Luncheon. We are thrilled once again to offer the Charles & Athena Mitchell scholarships for our first ($300), second ($200) and third ($100) place speakers! The Diocese Festival will be April 4-5-6 in Greenwood Village, Colorado at the Parish of St. Catherine.

EPISTLE READING
Hebrews 12:1-10

BRETHREN, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself, so that you may not grow weary or fainthearted. In your struggle against sin you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood. And have you forgotten the exhortation which addresses you as sons? “My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, nor lose courage when you are punished by him. For the Lord disciplines him whom he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives.” It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is treating you as sons; for what son is there whom his father does not discipline? If you are left without discipline, in which all have participated, then you are illegitimate children and not sons. Besides this, we have had earthly fathers to discipline us and we respected them. Shall we not much more be subject to the Father.

GOSPEL READING
Matthew 6:14-21
The Lord said, “If you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father also will forgive you; but if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

“And when you fast, do not look dismal, like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by men. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, that your fasting may not be seen by men but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.”
